The Good Soup Guide

THE BUFFET SHOP DELICATESSEN, COLQUHOUN SQUARE

good soup guideA gastronomic palace of magnificence. This is another of those truly wonderful delicatessens whose shelves are packed with all manner of intriguing edibles. There are great smells, an outside courtyard, and usually two soups each day, like 'Potato and Leek'. It feels a bit tardisish, as in Doctor Who's time-travelling police-box. Because the external facade seems fairly small and humble. And yet as soon as you open the door and wander inside you find the whole thing opens up into this culinary emporium that seems much bigger than the building in which it is housed.

ONE THING I SHOULD PERHAPS SAY ABOUT HELENSBURGH IS THAT THE TOWN HAS A VERY GOOD VARIETY OF SHOPS, AND THANKFULLY NOT A SHOPPING CENTRE IN SIGHT. SEE... IT CAN BE DONE!

We would like to say we were very pleasantly surprise by your phone call to us early last week when you rang to say we had won the Buffet Shop competition. Little did we realise what a treat lay in store for us.

We attend the Buffet Shop on Saturday and met Anne and Michael Curley - the owners and presenters of the St Valentine"s Day hamper containing the sumptuous home meal for two to celebrate St Valentine"s Day.

Well, from our arrival we were greeted by the owners and staff (as were the other customers in the Buffet Shop) with great warmth and willingness to do all they could to totally ensure we enjoyed our visit to the Buffet Shop.

After a coffee etc we had the presentation and the picture taken by Petra, the Advertiser photographer, and at that stage we could only marvel at the contents of the hamper.

After our return home, and the laying out of 'the booty', we were astounded at the amount and range of contents contained within the hamper.

Included was "champers", pate, fish, meat, salad, bread, cheese, heart-shaped sweets and a red rose and more besides and it was all wonderfully fresh and extremely well presented.

As we write this on Sunday we are still enjoying this most wonderful repast.

We would like to thank the Buffet Shop - Anne and Michael and all staff as well as The Helensburgh Advertiser for such a wonderful prize and such warmth.

To all who may read this who have NOT been to the Buffet Shop - what a treat awaits you when you do go.

It will please you immensely and we feel sure you will return again and again.

Many thanks for a glorious feast and a most pleasant memory of this occasion.

This is a lovely deli shop in the main town square.

They sell a large range of deli produce - cheeses, meats, chutneys, preserves and the likes. They also sell lovely ready-meals - much better quality that the stuff you can get in the supermarket.

They do home catering too, although I’ve never tried this.

At the back there is a coffee shop, and another seating area in the rear yard.

It’s a little on the pricey side, but the stuff is worth what you pay and always lovely and fresh.

The Buffet Shop (Helensburgh) gives excellent service. Always happy to serve you, advise on the different (and vast range) of products with free samples, it is a real treasure trove. One of the many great things is that it is open from 0700 in the morning, allowing commuters the opportunity to buy before they go to work. Great for party catering too - a wonderful facility that we are extremely fortunate to have in a small place like Helensburgh.
